Rhus verniciflua Stokes Syn. Toxicodendron vernicifluum (Stokes) F. Barkley. Varnish Tree, Chinese Lacquer Tree, Japanese Lacquer Tree or Japan Lacquer Deciduous tree, native to Himalaya and China, cultivated in other parts of east Asia and sometimes in Europe. A poisonous juice is extracted from the stem to make the black varnish used in making black lacquer in China and Japan, and an oil from the fruits was used in candle-making in China. Height to 18m (60ft) in China. Flowers open in July in large open clusters up to 25cm (10in) long. Fruits are 0·6cm (žin) across, ripening yellowish brown. Leaves are 30-60cm (1-2ft) long with 7-13 shortly stalked leaflets, which are softly downy underneath. |
