Rhus typhina L., family Anacardiaceae. Stag's Horn Sumac or Velvet Sumac Deciduous tree or shrub, native to eastern N. America, commonly grown in gardens in central and northern Europe. Height to 7.5m (25ft), but may reach 12m (40ft) in the wild. Flowers open in late June and July, male and female on separate trees. Females form a dense downy head 10-20cm (4-8in) long, males form larger looser clusters. Fruit (near left) is in a cluster 10-20cm (4-8in) long, crimson and velvety. Leaves are also covered with soft velvety hairs. They colour bright orange in autumn and this, combined with crimson fruits on female bushes, make a stunning display for any garden. |
