Tabebuia impetiginosa (Mart. ex DC) Standl., syn. T. avellanedae Loretz ex Griseb. Ipe or Toledo An upright tree to 20m with palmate leaves and heads of pink to purple flowers opening on the leafless tree, native of Mexico to Argentina, flowering in late winter, semi-evergreen; leaves with 5–7 leaflets. Flowers 4–7.5cm long, to 5cm across, with yellow in the throat. Seed pods to around 50cm. A good specimen tree in S California, sometimes flowering again in autumn, drought-resistant when established. Needs water in summer. USZ 9–11, surviving -6.5°C (20°F) of overnight frost. |
