Sutherlandia frutescens (L.) R. BR (Leguminosae). Balloon Pea, Duck Plant. A soft upright or spreading shrub with greyish leaves, red flowers and papery inflated seed pods, native of southern Africa, from the Cape northwards, mainly near the coast, growing in scrub on rocky hills, flowering in July-December (spring and early summer); it is also widely grown elsewhere and sometimes naturalised. Shrub to 1.2m. Leaves with leaflets 3 or more times as long as wide. Flowers 14-24mm long; pods 1.3-2 timesas long as wide, the stipe strongly downcurved from the calyx. For well-drained, sandy soil. Min. 0°C. The six or so species of Sutherlandia are all very similar, and being revised at present. Z9.
