Umbellularia californica (Hook. & Arn.) Nun. California Laurel, California Bay, California Olive, Pepperwood or Headache Tree. Family Lauraceae An evergreen, native to the coastal region of California and Oregon, which has yielded a valuable timber, useful for house interiors. Sometimes grown in collections and gardens in Europe. Its foliage is strongly aromatic when crushed and is said to induce a sharp headache after inhaling it. Height to about 24m (80ft), sometimes shrubby. Flowers open in January (much later in cool climates) in 2-4 clusters of about 10. Each flower is about 0.6cm (žin) across. Fruits are about 2.5cm (1in) long and ripen from yellowish green in August and September. Leaves are smooth, and uniformly pale green. They fade to yellow or orange before falling in their second season. Zone 8 |
