Ulex europaeus L. Gorse Native of W. Europe from Scotland to Spain, N. Africa and Italy, on sandy heathland and hills, flowering in April-June, and intermittently through autumn and winter. Evergreen, spiny shrub to 2.5 m. Leaves reduced to scales or small spines. Flowers 15-20 mm long, sweetly and heavily scented. Pod black, hairy. Acid or neutral soil; full sun. Hardy to -20°C, and sprouting from the base if cut down. |
