Ulmus laevis Pall. European White Elm, Spreading Elm or Fluttering Elm Native to central Europe and western Asia, grown in botanical collections. Height to about 20m (65ft). Flowers open in March on unusually long stalks, allowing them to flutter in the wind, hence one of its common names. Fruits are set by May, about 1.2cm (½in) long with white hairs around their edges. Leaves are strongly lopsided, one side at the base having 2 or 3 extra veins. They are slightly downy above and paler and downy beneath.
