Solanum wendlandii Hook. fil. Potato Vine, Giant Potato Creeper, Paradise Flower. A vigorous, more or less evergreen hairless climber with rounded lilac-blue flowers, native of Costa Rica, growing in montane forest at about 1500m, flowering in summer. Scrambling climber with spiny branches, to 5m tall. Lower leaves 10–25cm long, pinnate with a large terminal leaflet and smaller lateral leaflets; upper leaves simple and ovate. Flowers 4–5cm wide, in branched clusters to 50cm across, occasionally followed by ovoid orange fruits 8–10cm long. Min. 5°C. A magnificent large climber with a long flowering season. Z10.
