Vaccinium atrococcum (Gray) Keller (Ericaceae) Black Highbush Blueberry
Native of New England, Ontario and Indiana south to Florida and Arkansas, in swamps and pine barrens, wet woods and the edges of lakes, flowering in March-May, a week or more earlier than V. corymbosum. Deciduous shrub to 2 m. Leaves woolly, opening after the flowers. Calyx not glaucous. Berries black, shining, or whitish. Wet, acid soil. Hardy to -25°C.
