Sequoia sempervirens (D. Don) Endl., family Taxodiaceae. Coast Redwood, California Redwood. Evergreen coniferous tree, native to the Pacific coast from Oregon south through California. Grown for timber in N. America and sometimes in Europe in large gardens, parks and estates for ornament. Thought to be the tallest tree in the world, one having reached over 111m (367ft) in California. Flowers open in February, males yellow or brown about 0.6cm (¼in) long at tips of shoots, females about the same size, green. Cones ripen from a hard green conelet to woody brown cone about 1.8cm (¾in) long in one year. Foliage consists of scale-like leaves pressed closely to the stem and flat needle-like leaves in 2 rows on each side of the shoots. Bark is bright orange-red, soft and fibrous.
