Schotia brachypetala Sonder Weeping Boerboon, African Walnut, Tree Fuchsia. This wide-spreading, slow-growing, semi-evergreen tree or large shrub has pinnate leaves, which are flushed pink when they first appear in spring, becoming pale green later. As the leaves begin to fall, the small, bright red, fragrant flowers emerge; these are full of nectar and attract birds as pollinators. The fruits are flat brown pods. Schotiaafra is smaller than S.brachypetala, eventually making a shrub or small tree up to about 6m (20ft) and also has showy bright red flowers. Cultivation Needs fertile, well-drained soil in full sun. Height to 12m (40ft); spread to 6m (20ft). USZ 9–11, surviving -3°C (27°F) of frost occasionally. Tolerant of summer drought. Z9. |
