Yucca gloriosa L. (Agavaceae) Spanish Dagger, Roman Candle or Palm Lily This shrub, from North Carolina to Florida, has a woody trunk and stiff, spine-tipped leaves, to 50cm (20in) long and 5cm (2in) wide. The flower stem reaches 1.5m (5ft). Nodding, white or purplish flowers, 5–7cm (2–3in) long, open in autumn. Cultivation Needs dry, sandy or clay soil in full sun. Give some water in summer. Height to 6.5m (22ft); spread to 2m (6½ft). USZ 8–11, surviving -12°C (10°F) of overnight frost. Tolerant of summer drought. |
