Xanthorhiza simplicissima Marsh Syn. Zanthorhiza apifolia L'Hẻrit(Ranunculaceae) Yellowroot
Native of New York and West Virginia south to Florida and Alabama, in damp woods, scrub and by streams, flowering in April-May. Suckering deciduous shrub to 1 m, forming wide patches. Bark and roots yellow. Leaves purplish when young, colouring in autumn. Flowers 4 mm across. Moist acid soil; sun or part shade. Hardy to -20°C. Spring.
