Sorbus torminalis (Ilse) Fritsch Bastard Service Tree Wild Service Tree A hybrid between S. aria and S. aucuparia, sometimes planted in gardens and streets. Height to about 12m (40ft). Flowers open in May, each about 1.2cm (½in) across in flowerheads 6-10cm (2¼-4in) across with downy stems. Fruits are about 1.2cm (½in) across and ripen in September, sometimes with a few brown speckles. Leaves reflect the parent trees, deeply lobed with 1-4 pairs of free leaflets at the base. They are dark green above and white felty below. Leaf bud is about 0.8cm (1/3 in) long, dark red-brown. Bark is smooth dull grey with shallow cracks. Z6.
