Weigela 'Gustave Mallet'
An old cultivar, raised by Billard at Fontenay-aux-Roses in I868, probably by crossing W. coraiensis and W. florida. An upright deciduous shrub to 2 m, flowering in early summer. Hardy to -20°C. Best in rich moist soil, pruned after flowering to encourage strong new shoots. About 170 cultivars have been named, in shades of red, pink or white. 'Dame Blanche' and 'Bristol Snowflake' are good whites; 'Eva Rathke' and 'Eva Supreme' good dark reds.
