Washingtonia robusta H.A.Wendl. Syn. W.sonorae Wats. Mexican Fan Palm, Southern Washingtonia or Mexican Washingtonia This is similar in leaf to W. filifera, but has a taller, narrower trunk, being less than 80cm (32in) in diameter, and fewer threads among the leaves, which are 1.25m (4ft) long. It is wild in northwest Mexico, in Sonora, and in Baja California. Very salt-tolerant and much planted in coastal areas of California. Cultivation Easily grown in dry soil where there is sufficient water beneath. Height to 33m (110ft); spread to 3m (10ft). USZ 9–11, surviving -3°C (27°F) of overnight frost.
