Zelkova serrata (Thunb.) Mak. Keaki, Saw Leaf Zelkova or Japanese Zelkova Native to Japan, sometimes grown in large gardens and parks in Europe. Height to about 20m (65ft) or more. Flowers open in late April or May, males in leaf axils at base of new growth, about 0.4 (1/6in) long, females smaller and green towards the tip of the shoot. Fruit is about 0.3cm (1/8 in) and green. Leaves have longer stems than Z. carpinifolia and have 8-12 pairs of veins. They have more pointed teeth and colour yellow, orange and red in the autumn. Bark is smooth when young, becoming brown and orange and flaky when mature. Zelkova serrata is susceptible to Dutch elm disease. Zone 5 |
