Salix pentandra L. Bay Willow or Laurel-leaved Willow
Native to central and northern Europe (including Britain) and Asia Minor. Grows by rivers and is sometimes cultivated in gardens. Height to 20m (65ft). Catkins open in late April or May, males yellow, about 1.8-6cm (¾-2¼in) long, females green, more slender and shorter. Fruiting catkins may be 10cm (4in) long and release cottony seeds in June. Leaves are dark shiny green and broader than most willows. Z5.
