Zanthoxylum americanum Mill., Common Prickly Ash or Toothache Tree, family Rutaceae
Deciduous tree, native to eastern N. America, sometimes grown in European gardens. The North American Indians are said to have chewed the twigs and fruit to ease the pain of toothache. Height to about 8m (26ft) as a tree but usually a shrub. Flowers open in May or June. Fruits are about 0.6cm (žin) long and ripen to black in October or November. Leaves have 5-11 leaflets, with small rounded teeth and branches bear stout sharp prickles. Zone 3
