Asimina triloba (L.) Dun., family Annonaceae. Papaw A deciduous small tree, sometimes shrubby, native to eastern United States. Although the name Papaw has long been used for this tree it is not the one which bears the fruit named Pawpaw (Carica papaya). Height to 10.5-12m (35-40ft). Flowers are produced before leaves in early June, and are 2.5-3.7cm (1-1½in) across when fully open. Fruit, rarely produced in Britain, is cylindrical, 7.5-15cm (3-6in) long, unevenly shaped, ripening in September and October to dark brown, and containing a sweet, orange edible flesh, with good flavour, like its relative, the Custard Apple (Anona). Any moist soil; sun or part shade. Hardy to -20°C.
