Acacia melanoxylon R. Br. Blackwood An upright or spreading large shrub or tree, with flat leaves (phyllodes), and large globular flower heads in short racemes in the leaf axil, native of Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania, flowering in July-October (early spring). Tree to 30m; leaves 7-15 x 1-3cm, flat, elliptic. Flowers cream to pale yellow. Pods 5-15 x c.1cm, slightly twisted. For moist well-drained soil, and prefers cool climates, growing well in western Britain. It can become a nuisance by suckering. Min. -10°C. Z8.
