Acacia ‘Exeter Hybrid’ syn. Acacia x veitchiana hort. A tall shrub or small tree with long slender weeping branches, flat narrowly lanceolate leaves (phyllodes) and flowers in long slender spikes, flowering in winter and early spring. A tree to 5m; leaves scattered or in groups, dark green, 1.5-5cm x 2-4mm, with 1 or 3 nerves and a fine sharp point. Pale yellow flowers in spikes around 7cm long. Pods not seen. Needs moisture retentive, well-drained soil, but dislikes drought. Prune after flowering. This is one of the best winter-flowering trees for a tall conservatory, and will make a lovely weeping tree outside in mild climates. It is variously considered a hybrid between A. longifolia and A. riceana, or a form of A. riceana Henslow, a Tasmanian species, with usually narrower leaves. Min. -3°C. Z9. |
