Acacia berlandieri Benth. Huajillo A spreading shrub or small tree with long narrow pinnae and widely branched clusters of pale yellow globular heads, native of S. Texas and N. Mexico, growing in semi-desert, flowering in spring. Flowers sweetly scented, and a good source of honey. For dry areas, tolerant of heat and drought. Min. -5°C, perhaps less. Acacia farnesiana (L.) Willd., (not shown), is a native of Arizona south to Argentina, often grown for its very sweet scent. It has spines 1-3cm long and leaves with 2-8 pairs of pinnae. It can be grown in a pot under glass, to flower in winter, and makes a small tree in the open. Min. -3°C. Z9. |
