Arbutus x andrachnoides Link. Hybrid Strawberry Tree
A hybrid arising from a naturally occurring cross between Cyprus Strawberry Tree (A. andrachne) and Strawberry Tree (A. unedo). Grows wild in Greece. Height to 6-9m (20 to as much as 50ft). The white flowers are produced in late autumn or in March in spiked clusters 7cm (2žin) long, developing into the fruit. Leaves are toothed and have dark red stalks. Bark can be quite spectacular, dark red, brown peeling off in thin scales leaving paler areas underneath. Like A. andrachne it is tolerant of chalk or serpentine soils. Full sun. Hardy to -15°C. Z8.
