Amelanchier laevis Wieg., family Rosaceae. Snowy Mespilus or Allegheny Serviceberry A small deciduous tree, native to eastern N. America. Grows to 12m (40ft), producing delicate white fragrant blossom in late April, early May among pink unfolding leaves. Fruits ripen in July and August, through red to dark purple, 0.5cm (¼in) in diameter. Leaves colour bright red and yellow in autumn. Z4. |
