Antigonon leptopus Hook. & Arn. (Polygonaceae) Coral Vine A rampant climber with bright crimson-pink flowers, native of Mexico, on the coastal plain, climbing into trees, flowering in summer and autumn. Stems to 12m, from tuberous roots. Leaves thin, smooth, heart-shaped. Flowers c.1cm long, in racemes which end in branched tendrils. There are also deep red (‘Baja Red’), white and double-flowered varieties in cultivation. For a hot position with ample water in summer; good in desert climates, where it may become summer-dormant if dry. Min. 0°C, but lower if the tuber is protected from frost.
