Amentotaxus argotaenia (Hance) Pilger (Cephalotaxaceae) A rare evergreen shrub or small tree, native of S China from Sichuan to Hong Kong and Guangdong. Leaves green, glossy above, whitish underneath, needle-like, to 7cm long, 5mm wide. Male cones to 7cm long, 4cm wide; usually solitary, but sometimes in groups of 2–3. A shrub for cultivation outside only in areas with high summer temperatures (such as Florida), to enable the wood to ripen; although frost-tolerant for short periods, it requires glasshouse treatment in cool temperate regions. Min. -3°C.
