Alyogyne hakeifolia (Giord.) Alef. A lax shrub with fleshy narrow divided leaves and mauve flowers with a red centre, native of S Western Australia and the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia, growing in sandy soils, flowering November-March (summer). Stems to 3m. Leaves glabrous, fleshy, 5-10cm long, divided into narrow segments 1-2mm thick. Flowers opening only in hot sun, 5-6cm long with a dark centre, mauve, rarely pale yellow and unmarked. Needs a warm position, full sun and well-drained sandy soil. In a greenhouse this species can grow very fast and produces rather few flowers. Easily grown from cuttings. Min. 0°C. |
