Alyogyne huegelii (Endl.) Fryxwell (syn. Hibiscus huegellii Endl.) (Malvaceae) Lilac Hibiscus A tall open shrub with hairy lobed leaves and bluish-lilac flowers with a white centre, native of SW Western Australia and the Lofty Ranges in South Australia, flowering mainly October-March and on and off throughout the winter. Stems to 2.5m and inclined to become straggly unless carefully pruned. Leaves roughly hairy on both sides, 2-7cm long and wide, deeply 5-lobed, each lobe with shallow rounded oak-like lobes. Flowers 7-10cm across, usually bluish-mauve, but sometimes deep purple, white or yellow.
Cultivation Grow in well-drained soil in sun or partial shade. Prune regularly to control straggly growth. Protect from wind.
Height and spread to 2m (6½ft). USZ 9 –11, surviving -6.5°C (20°F) of overnight frost. Tolerant of summer drought.
