Aloe dichotoma Masson. Guliver Tree This strange, primitive-looking, tree-like succulent perennial has a thick bare trunk at the base, branching out stiffly to form a distinctive flat top. It is native of the Cape area of South Africa, Namaqualand, and Namibia, where it grows on north-facing slopes in hilly areas. The thick, narrowly lance-shaped, greyish green leaves, 25–35cm (10–14in) long, 4–6cm (1 ½–2½in) wide, have tiny yellowish teeth on the margin. The flowers, 3.5cm (1 ½in) long, are bright yellow and carried on a branched inflorescence in midwinter. Cultivation Grow in a warm, dry, sunny position in sandy soil in a desert climate. Would make a dramatic focal point in a large garden. Height to 9m (30ft); spread to 7m (20ft). USZ 10–11, surviving -1°C (30°F) of overnight frost. Tolerant of summer drought. |
