Abies nordmanniana (Stev.) Spach. Algerian Fir Native to the Caucasus, grown in collections and gardens for ornament. Growth may be slow but the tree can reach 50-60m (l65-l95ft) in its native environment. Flowers are produced in late April, males on branches all over crown, females only at the top. Cones are 15cm (6in), green and resinous through the summer, ripening to brown in October. Needles form 2 rows, the upper ones being. shorter, often producing dense, luxurious looking foliage. Bark is grey and smooth, eventually splitting into square plates. Z4.
