Abies magnifica Murr. Red Fir or Californian Red Fir
Native to Oregon and California at altitudes of 1500-1800m (5000-6000ft) but grown as an ornamental tree in other parts of America and in Europe, as it develops into a large, beautifully symmetrical tree. An old tree may reach 65m (220ft). Flowers are produced in May and cones are sparse but large; 20cm (8in) long. They are golden green or purplish when young, ripening to brown in the autumn. Foliage is made up of curved needles which become almost four-sided with age. Bark is grey and corky and on old trees in California turns red. Z5.
