Abies cephalonica Loud. Greek Fir
Native to mountains of southern Greece and planted for ornament in large gardens. Height to 49m (130ft). Male and female flowers open in April; males red, turning yellow, females green, about 2.5cm (1in) long. Cones may be 10cm (4in) long. Foliage is distinct since the needles radiate from all sides of the twigs. This, combined with the resinous buds and bracts on the cones, makes the Greek Fir unmistakable. Bark is dark brown, breaking into small plates. Z5.
