Akebia quinata Decne (Lardizabalaceae) Native of Japan, in Honshu and southwards, in China as far west as Hubei, and Korea, growing in scrub and hedges in the mountains, flowering in April-May. A usually evergreen climber, up to 6 m. Inflorescence with female flowers at the base, male at the apex, the pedicels of the female flowers at an acute angle with the inflorescence axis. Any soil; sun or shade; usually trained on a wall or pergola. Hardy to -15°C.
