Agave americana L. (Agavaceae) This succulent perennial is a native of Mexico and naturalized in the Mediterranean region. It forms a huge rosette, with leaves to 1.5m (5ft) long. A spike, to 8m (25ft) long, with horizontal tiers of yellow flowers, to 10cm (4in) long, is produced in summer. ‘Mediopicta-alba’ has a white stripe down the centre of each leaf; ‘Marginata’ has pale-edged leaves.
Cultivation Easily grown in any dry soil in full sun; is good also in a pot
Height to 8m (25ft); spread to 3m (10ft). USZ 9–11, if dry surviving -6.5°C (20°F) of frost. Tolerant of summer drought.
