Aeonium The 35 or so species of Aeonium are found mainly in the Canary Islands, with isolated species in Madeira, the Yemen and northern Africa. Many of the Canary species are confined to one or two islands. Most grow on cliffs and all need well-drained soil in sun or part shade; min. -3°C, for short periods, if kept dry in winter. Illustrated here is: Aeonium glandulosum (Ait.) Webb & Berth. A succulent biennial or monocarpic perennial with flat rosettes, and a widely branched inflorescence, native of Madeira, growing on shady cliffs, flowering in spring and early summer. Rosette to 30cm across, usually c. 20cm. Leaves flat in winter, upright in summer. Inflorescence to 25cm; flowers pale yellow.
