Brunfelsia pauciflora
Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow
This shrub has flat flowers, 5–7cm (2–3in) across, which change colour from purple to white overnight, hence the common name. ‘Macrantha’ has purple flowers, 7cm (3in) across, which do not show such an abrupt colour change. Both are wild in Brazil, flowering in spring and summer.
Cultivation Easily grown in fertile soil, in shelter and with partial shade in hot areas.
Height to 3m (10ft); spread to 4.5m (15ft). USZ 9–11, surviving -6.5°C (20°F) of overnight frost. Best with summer water. Z10.
