Brugmansia sanguinea Red Angel's Trumpet This shrub is probably the hardiest of the species, being wild in the Andes from Colombia to northern Chile, at up to 3,000m (10,000ft). The long narrow flowers are pollinated by large, long-billed hummingbirds. The flowers, 15–25cm (6–10in) long, borne during summer, are usually tomato-red with a yellow tube and have little scent. In ‘Golden Queen’ the flowers are all yellow. Cultivation As for B. x candida, although grows well in cooler conditions. Height and spread to 10m (33ft). USZ 9–11, surviving -6.5°C (20°F) of overnight frost. Needs summer water. |
