Beaumontia grandiflora (Roxb.) Wall. (Apocynaceae) Nepal Trumpet Flower, Herald's Trumpet or Easter Lily A very large and robust climber with large white scented trumpet-shaped flowers, native of Nepal to Assam, Burma, SE Tibet and Yunnan, growing in scrub and on rocks and climbing up trees in the forest at 300–1500m, just below the winter frost level, flowering in March–April. Stems climbing in coils to 10m or more. Leaves elliptic to obovate, 18–30cm long. Flowers 6–8 on a cyme in the leaf axils, with a leafy calyx to 5cm long and corolla 12–13cm long, 8–10cm across. A wonderful climber for a climate with a cool dry winter and warm wet summer. Min. -2°C. The closely-related B. murtonii Craib has wider open flowers; it needs a more tropical climate. |
