Acer saccharum Marsh. Sugar Maple
Native to eastern N. America. Cultivated as an ornamental or shade tree, but perhaps best known as the major source of maple sugar in N. America. Height to 30-36m (100-120ft). Flowers open in April on slender stalks 5cm (2in) long. Keys have wings about 2.5cm (1in) long. Leaves are similar to Norway Maple (A. platanoides) but the liquid in the stem is clear rather than milky. Leaf base is usually less heart-shaped than is shown. The autumn colours are considered the most spectacular of all American maples, turning crimson, orange and yellow in huge masses. Z3.
