Acer rubrum L. Red Maple, Scarlet Maple or Swamp Maple. A large tree, native to eastern N. America, cultivated in Europe for its autumn colours, and used in America in furniture manufacture. Height to 36m (120ft) though often smaller in cultivation. Flowers open in late March or early April and often have male and female flowers on separate trees. The dense red clusters give the leafless tree a beautiful red glow. Fruit are also red on longer stalks than the flowers with wings lcm (½in), spread at an angle of 60°. Leaves are similar to Silver Maple. Z3. |
