Coccoloba uvifera (L.) L. (Polygonaceae) An evergreen tree with almost round leathery leaves and purplish, edible grape-like fruit, native of Bermuda, the West Indies and tropical America, growing on sand dunes and rocks by the sea, flowering in spring and summer. Tree to 10m with grey bark. Leaves c. 20cm across, cordate at the base, with red veins. Flowers scented, greenish. Berries 1.5-2cm across. For sandy soil, and tolerant of salty wind. Min. 0°C. |
