Acer japonicum Thunb. Downy Japanese Maple or Fullmoon Maple Native to Japan, grown in large gardens. Height to 9m (30ft). Flowers brightly coloured open in mid April. Keys are slightly downy at first, with widely spreading wings 2.5cm (1in) long, with red stems. Leaves are almost circular, with 7-11 lobes, more than most other maples, some specimens colour well other stay green. A.japonieum cv. 'Aconitifolium', Fernleaf Maple, has deeply cut leaves with toothed lobes turning dark red in autumn. Height reaches about 3m (10ft) though usually bushy. A.japonicum cv. 'Vitifolium' is similar to the species but is larger, to 13m (42ft) with larger leaves which turn glorious reds and orange in autumn. Z5. |
