Cladrastis kentukea (Dum. Cours.) Rudd syn. Cladrastis lutea (Michx.) K. Koch, family Leguminosae. Yellow Wood, Kentucky Yellow Wood or Yellow Ash Deciduous tree, native to south-eastern United States, grown for ornament in eastern States and Europe. The wood is bright yellow when first cut and yields a yellow dye. Height to about 12m (40ft) but may be taller in forest conditions. Blossom is white and fragrant and opens in June in. bunches 20-35cm (8-14in) long, though not always produced in Europe. Each flower is about 2.5cm (1in) long on a hairy stalk. Seed pods are 7.5-10cm (3-4in) long, 1.2cm (½in) wide containing 4-6 seeds and ripening in September. leaves are the best feature in Europe, turning bright yellow in autumn. |
