Acer cissifolium (Sieb. & Zucc.) K. Koch Vine-leaved Maple
Native of Japan, cultivated in large gardens and collections. Grows to 9m (30ft) with a girth of 1m (3ft). Male and female flowers are produced on the same tree in May, forming pairs of flower heads 10-12cm (4-4¾in) long. Keys have red wings, 2-3cm (lin) long, diverging at an angle of 60° or less. Leaves have 3 leaflets. Compare with Box Elder (A. negundo) and Nikko Maple (A. nikoense). They turn pale yellow and red in autumn. Z6.
