Acer circinatum Pursh Vine Maple Native to west N. America, growing on stream banks on British Columbia coasts southwards to Sacramento River, California. The wood is heavy and close-grained and was once used by the Indians of the northwest for making fishing net frames. The tree is now becoming popular in small gardens in Europe. It may grow to 10-12m (33-40ft) and has a stout trunk but in its native state is usually prostrate and bushy with branches rooting where they touch the ground. The flowers are unusually bright for a maple and have male and female parts in separate flowers in the same cluster. Keys have wings 3.7cm (1½in) long and are bright red when young. Leaves are bright red and orange in the autumn. Z5.
