Acer capillipes Maxim. Red Snake-bark Maple Native to Japan, grown in large gardens and becoming popular in small gardens for its attractive appearance. Height may reach 9-14m (30-45ft). Flowers open in May, about 25 in a curved flowerhead. Fruits in the same long drooping bunches, have keys 1-2cm (½-¾in) long with wings spread at an angle of 120-180°. Leaves are similar to those of Moose-bark (A. pensylvanicum) and Grey-budded Snake-bark Maple (A. rufinerve) but do not have rusty hairs on undersides, and usually have bright red stems. They turn orange and red in autumn making a stunning display in a small garden. The green and silver striped bark gives the name Snake-bark. Z5.
