Acer campestre L. Field Maple or Hedge Maple Native to Europe, including Britain. Often found in hedges and the timber is used for turning and carving since it is usually in short lengths. Height to 4.5-9m (15-30ft) sometimes much larger. Flowers are hermaphrodite clustered in upright heads of 10 or so, appearing in late April or early May and developing into the hanging fruits. The leaves turn golden yellow to red in autumn. Field Maple hybridizes with the Montpelier (A. monspessulanum) and Cretan (A. sempervirens) Maples in south Europe, where confusion may arise over identification. A milky sap exuded from the leaves distinguishes the Field Maple. Z4.
