Catharanthus (Apocynaceae)
This genus has six species of evergreen, low-growing shrubs, five from Madagascar and one from India and Sri Lanka.
Catharanthus roseus (syn. Vinca rosea)
madagascar periwinkle, cayenne jasmine
This shrub, originally from Madagascar, produces five-petalled, pink flowers, or white with a pink eye, around 2.5cm (1in) across. They appear all year round.
Cultivation Easily grown in any soil.
Height and spread 2m (6 ½ft). USZ 10–11, needing minimum of -1°C (30°F) overnight. Requires water in summer.
