Betula lutea Michx. Syn. Betula alleghaniensis Britt. Yellow Birch A large tree, native to north-eastern N. America, where the timber is used for flooring, furniture and boxes. Twigs have a smell and taste of wintergreen. Height to 30m (100ft) in the wild. Flowers open in May, the male catkins 7 5-10cm (3-4in) long, females 1.2-2cm (½-¾in) long, developing into unstalked, erect fruiting catkins 2.5-3.7cm (1-1½in) long which differ from those of B. lenta by being fatter and downy. Leaves have tufts of hairs in vein axils underneath and turn clear yellow in autumn. Bark is light golden brown, outer layers peeling back. Z3. |
